Care of Your New Catahoula Puppy

Rancho Santiago's great Catahoula Genetics
plus the best food builds bone, muscle, health and long life.

Food:

We experience excellent results using “Ultra 24” Milk Replacer. We buy it at Gebos or a farm supply store. Flood high protein/fat dog food kibbles in the liquid milk replacer and feed the pup all it can eat in a 24 hours with a little left over. LEARN TO READ AND COMPARE INGREDIENTS & % OF PROTEIN, etc. LISTED IN DIFFERENT PLACES ON THE SACK between brands. It is kept confusing on purpose! Proper feeding is super important for the pup’s growth & development. Give the pup an alternative of dry kibble food nest to the milk kibbles & switch to dry kibbles when the pup likes dry food best.

Based on a lot of study we have now feed Purina chow where the #1 ingredient is a meat such as chicken, lamb, etc. We caution pup owners to NOT feed a dog food where the #1 listed ingredient is corn becasue the protein in corn is not readily digestible for dogs. At this time we feed the Purina 44 # red sack that lists "lamb" as the first ingredient & it has a higher fat content to our breeding dogs and pups.***Caution Purnia is making many formula mix changes in Purina dog foods.

Dr. Jim recently saw a new dog food brand on TV touting organic vegetables, avacado and dried blue berries in their dog food ... well heck! ... dogs are carnivores not blue berry eaters, what a scam. A lot of dog food is sold on the basis of appealing to the owners emotions and not for its nutritional value to dogs. .

Water & Housing:

Keep fresh clean water available at all times for the pup. Pups need protection from the cold or overly hot weather. These are baby pups that need careful care as does any baby.

Veterinarian Care & Vaccinations: & Deworming:

*** Always follow your local vet’s recommendations for your area!

Your pup has been dewormed using Panacur, 1/2 cc per 5# of weight for 3 consecutive days or Strongid with a follow up after 3 weeks . Ask your vet. when it will need deworming again and use what dewormer they recommend. Usually deworn every 3 months carefully following directions.

Check with the veterinarian in your area for their recommended schedule of vaccinations. We vaccinate for “Parvo” at 4 to 5 weeks of age. Your pup will need revaccinated for both “Distemper & Parvo” at 8 - 9 weeks of age. However, it is common in many areas to vaccinate using a 5 or 7 way mix vaccination. Ask your experienced local vet. for their ideas for your location.  Rabies vaccination in our area are usually given at 12 months of age.

Waggin healthy tails,
